Policymakers are attempting to address the rising cost of health coverage and the growing number of uninsured Americans. Debate is centered over how much to expand public plans (like Medicare/Medicaid), the ability of implementing changes to the insurance market to increase the number (and affordability) of products, reforming some healthcare practices in ways that increase efficiencies and drive down costs, whether to require an individual mandate to bring everyone into a plan, and, of course, how to fund the program (where options include tax hikes, employer coverage mandates, and increase government spending). For years, EPI has examined the economic impact of various healthcare policies. Newly-released research takes a closer look at the characteristics of the roughly 47 million uninsured Americans to help drive a policy solution that is properly targeted to meet the needs of this constituency. Research we commissioned from Harvard University has compared the effects of various health insurance reform proposals, and our 2007 HealthCare Symposium with Cornell University looked at the economics of “pay or play” employer mandates. Poverty
The United States Census bureau defines the poverty level for different classifications of Americans. The poverty level varies based on both the size and composition of the family. In 2007, the poverty level for a single adult is $10,210 whereas the level for a four-person family is $20,650. There is currently a great deal of debate concerning both the poverty level and the formula used to determine the various thresholds. |
